Self guided you can go to as many places as you’d like or as few as you’d like, it’s all up to you.

Harrison is know as a great place to escape the heat of the city and to frolic in the water play land that is Harrison Lake & River. It is also a vibrant farming community producing corn, chickens, cheeses and hazelnuts. A great way to spend a few hours or an entire day is to visit and explore the farm economy that makes up the area and that’s exactly what my Mom and I did. We picked up a Circle Farm Tours brochure and headed on an adventure into farmland. Not quite as exotic as an African safari but at least on this adventure I can eat and shop Smile

Circle Farm Tours

The best thing the Circle Farm Tours offers is that it is a self guided. You can choose to visit all 10 stops on the tour or just one of them. You can do the tour in one day or stretch it out over a few, the choice is all yours. My Mom and I decided to check out 2 of the stops. We wanted to visit a third stop but unfortunately The Back Porch is only open Thursdays to Sundays and we were doing our tour on a Monday.

First up we visited Farm House Cheeses which is located on the way into Harrison Hot Springs, you can’t miss their big signs.

They have a gift shop right at the front of the property filled with CHEESES! I double checked their website and it confirmed they make over 20 types of cheeses, the aged cheddar being my favourite.

I’m not exactly sure what happened but a lot of the pictures I took did not turn out so unfortunately you are just going to have to visit Farm House Cheeses for yourself. The head cheesemaker Debra Amrein-Boyes has been recognized as one of only 12 persons in Western Canada/US to be inducted into the French Cheese Guild “Guilde des Fromagers Confrerie de Saint-Uguzon”. I think that means she makes really good cheese! My taste buds certainly agreed.

Next up we decided to check out Canadian Hazelnut. Did you know that nuts were grown in BC? I certainly didn’t. Peaches, Apples and cheese for sure but I didn’t expect we’d grow hazelnuts here. Located a 5 minute drive away from Farm House Cheese, it’s hard to miss thanks to the big red and white sign.

When you enter the gift shop you’ve entered the land where everything can be made from hazelnuts. Hazelnut Butter, a healthier version of Nutella, Hazelnut Flour, Hazelnut Oil and of course a huge selection of candied and spiced hazelnuts.

The favourite flavour I tasted was the Sweet and Spicy, just like me Smile

Out back of the gift shop is the orchard where all the hazelnut trees are growing. Apparently in September and October you can actually pick your own hazelnuts. Might be a reason to come back for a visit.

These are only 2 out of 10 possible stops on the Circle Farm Tours. Other possible stops include Tasty Chicken Farm, Kilby Historic Site, the Sparkes Corn Barn and Tulips of the Valley – Tulip Festival. There is something for everyone to keep entertained. My Mom and I loved our visits and did a little shopping along the way Smile

Have you ever done the tour? What are your must visit stops on the tour? I’d love to hear.

Tomorrow we explore one of the main attractions at Harrison, the water. Stay tuned.
