Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It also happens to be the coolest part of the day when you are in Palm Springs during the Summer season.  Along Palm Canyon Drive, you’ll find a small cafe with two patios, a wicked Smoothie menu and Jalapeno Bacon. Yes, I am talking about Cafe Europa Palm Springs. From the outside, it looks cute enough, but once you step inside and discover the back patio and the tropical courtyard you’ll be won over. It is a mini oasis from the desert heat offering a bit of shade and plenty of people watching opportunities. Oh and they also serve up a mean and tasty breakfast.

Located at 301 N Palm Canyon Drive (new location), Cafe Europa is in the heart of The Corridor. Next door to it is my favourite coffee shop in all Palm Springs, Koffi. It is not uncommon for me to eat breakfast and then grab a good coffee to go. Here I can do both within 20 feet of each other.

Daytime highs can reach the 40ºC + or 100ºF + so if you want to eat outdoors comfortably the best time to do it is during breakfast when the temperature is only in the early 30’s. We arrived just as they opened at 8:30 am and had our pick of tables. Of course, we chose the back patio looking over the courtyard.

Our first order of business is to order some drinks. John chooses a glass of fresh squeezed Orange Juice while I try one of their famous smoothies. It is a Blackberry smoothie for me. This smoothie could be breakfast all by itself, but I’ve a super busy day ahead of me, so I  look at it as the starter course. We also order a couple fo glasses of water, so we stay hydrated. Remember, California is in a drought so if you want water you have to ask for it at most restaurants.

Beverages all taken care of we look over the menu and ponder which fabulous menu item to have. I struggle between an omelette, a scramble or one of their signature breakfast sandwiches. Too many choices that all look so good. John has no trouble deciding what he wants. He orders The Spanish Omelette with a side of Jalapeno Bacon. Ok, I’ve made my decision, it will be the Breakfast Sandwich for, with Applewood smoked bacon, sunnyside-up fried egg, and cheddar on whole wheat bread.

What are the green things on the bacon you wonder? That is the Jalapeno. It is spicy enough to wake you up but offset by the sweetness of the Applewood smoked bacon. Yummy! My Breakfast Sandwich is equally amazing. Savoury and sweet all at the same time. It pairs perfectly with the smoothie I’m half way through. I’m full but not stuffed. Look at that beautiful yolk as it cascades down over the Applewood smoked bacon…. nom nom nom.

All of that was enjoyed while sitting in the courtyard people watching. Watching them as they come and go from the other shops, walking their dogs or running in for a cup of coffee from Koffi. This is the most people I’ve seen outdoors yet in Palm Springs. I was also intrigued by the massive metal sculpture towards the back of the courtyard. I wonder if it honours some former famous Hollywood cowboy that called Palm Springs home…

Cafe Europa is only open for breakfast and lunch. It closes at 2:30 pm so if you want to get in on one of the best breakfasts in Palm Springs you’ve got to be an early riser. The side benefit is you’ll be able to be outside for more than 15 minutes without melting in the heat.

They are only open for breakfast and lunch but they do both well. Sit on the back patio where you can enjoy the courtyard view and still be in the shade. They breakfast sandwiches are amazing and if they are serving smoothies order the Date Shake! Oh and one more thing Jalapeno Bacon, you are welcome.
