Who’s got the best Key Lime Pie in the Florida Keys? Do you prefer a Graham Cracker Crust or Pastry Shell? Whipping Cream or do you swear by Meringue as your topping of choice? Who knew one pie could evoke such a cult around its many variations. I’ve been told you are either Team Whipping Cream or Team Meringue. I like both, but since I am here in the Florida Keys, I’ve decided to check out for myself who serves up the best Key Lime Pie. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it, and it might as well be me.
My first stop on the best Key Lime Pie tour of the Florida Keys begins at Bue Heaven. Touted as the most casual dining experience in Key West they offer al fresco dining with cats and chickens roaming at will. If you prefer “Chicken free” dining, you can move inside. Everything on the menu here is epic and fresh. I’m here for the Key Lime Pie though. A Graham Cracker crust with a toasted meringue top that almost reaches heaven it is so big. Sweet and tart at the same time this Key Lime Pie gets 5 limes out of 5 from me.
Next it is The Stoned Crab for their Graham Cracker Crust, whipping cream and Lime drizzled Key Lime Pie. While it looks great, this pie was a bit too sweet for me to consider it a contender for best Key Lime Pie. A very tasty pie and perfect if you don’t enjoy the tart and sour taste of Key Limes, but for me it’s 2.5 limes out of 5.
Frozen Key Lime Pie from Kermit’s Key West Lime Shoppe is my next stop. With three locations to choose from you won’t have any problem snacking on this tasty slice of pie. Frozen, then dipped in chocolate and served frozen on a stick this Key Lime Pie gets two thumbs up for fun and flavour, but only 3.5 limes out of 5 overall. It’s great on a hot day exploring Duval Street, but it wouldn’t be my go to Key Lime Pie.
The Conch Seafood Republic Company is the next stop on my best Key Lime Pie tour. A nice pie served with a Graham Cracker and Cashew Nut crust and whipping cream this pie seems geared towards the masses. A nice enough pie, but too sweet and not tart enough for me. I want Key Lime goodness that makes my lips smack. 3 limes out of 5 for this slice of pie.
On the island of Islamorada, I tried a fantastic Key Lime Pie at Marker 88. Made with a pastry crust and topped with toasted meringue this treat gets very high praise from me. 4.5 limes out of 5 which comes as no surprise as the rest of the food and drinks on the menu are phenomenal. Oh, and the stars of Netflix Bloodline also hang out here.
Last but not least it’s time for a visit to Mrs Mac’s Kitchen in Key Largo. Opened in 1976 Mrs. Mac’s is casual, comfortable and serves up some very tasty food. Try the Chili with Cheese and Onions if you are hungry. When it comes to their Key Lime Pie, you won’t be disappointed. I give it 4 limes out of 5. A bit on the sweeter side, but still good. Of course, if you aren’t in the mood for pie you can have a Key Lime Pie Milkshake. It is equally delicious and quite possibly even more filling. You choose, you can’t go wrong.
Who’s the winner? Me, as I got to try a whole lot of great Key Lime Pie. Out of these six places, my favourite has to be Blue Heaven in Key West. It was the tartest, and I think I am now leaning towards being Team Meringue as far as toppings go.
No matter where you try Key Lime Pie in The Florida Keys thought you are a winner. You are eating Key Lime Pie in The Florida Keys!
