The only rooftop patio in Yaletown.
For the past five years there has been only one rooftop patio option in Yaletown and that’s at The Keg Steakhouse & Bar on Mainland Street. While the decor may shows signs of five years of being open to the Vancouver weather the crowds are showing no signs of slowing down. It’s as busy today on the rooftop as it was five years ago when I showed up on opening day. Beautiful people, stunning city view of condo towers and blue skies, deep banquet seating for getting cozy on and when the temperature cools down fireplaces in every section light up. This rooftop patio may need a fresh coat of paint but the energy and crowds make it a must have on my 30 Best Patios list.
The Yaletown Keg can be found at 1011 Mainland St. To find the patio you have to take the elevator all the way up to the top floor. I recommend arriving early or after the dinner rush otherwise you’ll have to wait. My trusty patio buddies Gus Fosarolli and Nancy Wong are joining me tonight in what we nicknamed our Throwback Thursday dinner. It’s Throwback Thursday because the menu at the Keg is a welcome blast from the past or old school steakhouse if you’d prefer. When we arrived we had a short wait at the bar before we were able to grab a table. I did tell you this place gets busy right, it’s only 6pm.
Once we are seated at our table it’s time to pour over the menu, a good chance we are all having steak but you have to look anyway. I order us a couple of appetizers that I’ve had every time I go to a Keg restaurant, the Escargot and Mushrooms Neptune. Two classic steakhouse appetizer, snails in garlic and butter and crab stuffed mushrooms topped with cream cheese, oh the memories these dishes evoke.
Of course without even ordering it we get a loaf of bread for the table. Do you remember the days when every restaurant you went to served up a bread basket for the table? Some traditions should never go away and as a bread lover I say bring back the bread! Apologies to all my Gluten Free friends.
True to form when at the Keg we all order steaks. Nancy went for the Filet Mignon served Blue Rare with a side of French Fries. Gus ordered the classic Prime Rib while I went for the daily special a Manhattan New York Strip covered in Scallops, shrimp and crab meat. The Keg knows how to cook a steak that is for sure. All of our entrees were exactly what I expected them to be, great. Oh and did I forget to mention I had the baked potato with all the fixings as my side accompaniment. Hmmm I love a baked potato!
Patio Check list:
- View – this patio is all about the crowds although you can see the great Yaletown skyline
- Reservations – no so I recommend arriving early or being ok with a wait at the bar
- All weather patio – yes and in fact it’s open year round
- parking – very limited parking in Yaletown
- Social Media – follow them on Facebook and Twitter
- Coolness – this is a party patio so you bring the cool
What can I say about the Keg Yaletown rooftop patio, it’s five years old and showing no signs of slowing down. As one of the few rooftop patios in Vancouver it’s awesome to be above the craziness of the streets and here you can just focus on having a good time with the people you came with or even possibly someone you see from across the bar…. Have fun
