The UK is currently stuck in the classic bipolar weather of blazing sunshine and torrential downpours, so it’s no surprise that the top 10 most popular holiday destinations for Brits this summer (both short-haul and long-haul) seem to be centred around the promise of warm climates, glaring sunshine and brighter skies.
According to data published by TripAdvisor in its Summer Holiday Value Report, which takes hotel booking data from the 1st June until 31st August 2017, the most popular short-haul destinations were heavily influenced by nightlife, sunshine and sand.
Topping the list at number one was Ibiza, the home of exuberant nightlife where Brits go to really let their hair down. Closely following the party destination were a few of the sunshine-drenched islands where the sand is beautiful and a tan is almost guaranteed. Crete, Majorca, Santorini and Cyprus were all on the list, as was the beautiful Portuguese island of Madeira. Rounding off the top 10 were Barcelona, Gran Canaria and budget Benidorm – evidence, if anything, that the Brits really do value their all-inclusive beach holidays.
When it comes to escaping Europe, us Brits tend to be more adventurous, shunning the beach for culture and sightseeing. This is evidenced by New York and Marrakech placing firmly in the top 10. However, it appears that some still value white expanses of sand; the Indonesian island of Bali placed number one on the list, while Barbados with its turquoise seas was also right up there.
The US has always been a destination for those seeking the high-life and, aside from the Big Apple, the States had two other entrants in the list. The home of Disney, Orlando, took the number two spot, with swarms of Brits heading over to the Disney World Resort each year. Las Vegas was also an incredibly popular long-haul destination, a city of lights, gambling and shotgun weddings – what’s not to love?
Finally, for those on a budget, the Thai capital Bangkok was shown to be the cheapest of the top 10 destinations, mixing culture and beauty with a touch of frugality.
Short haul: 1. Ibiza, 2. Crete, 3. Majorca, 4. Santorini, 5. Cyprus, 6. Malta, 7. Barcelona, 8. Benidorm, 9. Madeira, 10. Gran Canaria.
Long haul: 1. Bali, 2. Orlando, 3. Las Vegas, 4. Maldives, 5. New York City, 6. Bangkok, 7. Dubai, 8. Marrakech, 9. Phuket, 10. Barbados.
