A golden beach, warm tropical ocean and almost total privacy from the rest of the world. Whoever thought to build the original cottages of the Royal Lahaina Resort on Kaanapali Beach was a genius. Built in 1962 the Royal Lahaina Resort started the trend that 12 other hotels and vacation resorts have followed. Once a vacation playground of Hawaiian royalty, it is easy to see why as the resort is situated on 20+ pristine acres that include a tennis facility with 11 courts including a “centre court” that plays host to many world class tournaments. With two accommodation styles to choose from you have a choice, pick the cottage and have lots of room with home-like amenities and features. Choose the tower and enjoy condo luxury with plenty of Hawaiian touches, like custom made teak furnishings. Either way, the Royal Lahaina Resort is a definite escape from the every day of your life. It’s time to enjoy some Maui time.

I arrived at Kahului Airport at about 9 pm. After renting a car and making the 45-minute drive to the resort it was around 10 pm when I checked in. Thankfully the staff was more awake than I was. After all the usual paperwork at check in, they helped me load my bags into a golf cart and drove me to one of the beachfront cottages. Built in 1962 it has been updated so it does have all the amenities I’ll need.

The cottages are unique and possibly the perfect fit for families or groups of friends that are travelling together and want to have a bit more space than a typical hotel room would offer. Each cottage is split into four units. Two on the ground level and two on the second floor. The adjacent units have a connecting door for those that rent both. One unit will have a kitchen and dining area along with two double beds where the other will have a private bedroom and living area. Add them together and it’s just like home.

As I arrived late and moved to a different suite first thing the next day I didn’t take any photos. You can see what is available in the hotel gallery here.

From cottages to tower at the Royal Lahaina Resort

Before I move to the tower I grab a morning coffee at the coffee shop, feast at the bountiful breakfast buffet and grab a quick swim in the ocean just 25 steps from my cottage. Can every day please start this way?

I am really glad I didn’t unpack as the upgrade to a Lanai Suite at the Royal Lahaina Resort tower is more my style. Check out the short unrooming video I made when I first saw it.

Now that is what I call luxury and check out the view from one of the three balconies.

I’ve had some ocean time and now I think I’m due for some pool time in one of the two pools at the resort.

Before dinner time I also think I deserve a drink to help me relax and unwind in my room while I get ready. Can you say hello to Mr Pineapple? He doesn’t always come with a view, but mine did.

Life is good at the Royal Lahaina

My time at the Royal Lahaina Resort is all about resting, relaxing and some swim time, but you may be interested in a bit more activity and a game of tennis may just be what you need. There are 11 courts available including a centre court where you can show off your form to the crowds.

Rest or play, the choice is yours. Cottage comfort or tower luxury the choice is yours. Since 1962 the Royal Lahaina Resort is one of the best options for escaping it all in Maui. Another bonus feature is that this little part of Kaanapali is secluded from the other areas where the big hotels are located. It’s like having your own private beach area.
