Last year, more than half (53%) of Canadians stated that they would be staying in their country for their 2017 vacations, according to an online survey by flight comparison search engine Skyscanner. There are a number of reasons why the “staycation” is proving popular among Canadians, who opt to see more of their beautiful country than venturing to the United States, Europe or even the Caribbean.

What is a staycation?

A staycation is, put simply, a holiday in your country of origin. You and your family or friends drive to local destinations that you might not have experienced before and behave just like a traditional tourist. It’s a concept that’s proving particularly popular with millennials, who are adventurous and keen to seek new experiences at all times. Let’s take a look at some of the core reasons behind the rising popularity of staycations in Canada and the rest of the world.

Eco-friendly vacations

Sustainable tourism is an increasingly important trend among millennials. There is a desire to make a conscious bid to minimise the carbon footprint of holidaymakers and paying homage to local traditions and cultures that may have previously gone under the radar. There’s a genuine sense that Canadians around the country are beginning to recognise that it’s not always necessary to book cross-border breaks or speak a different language to be on vacation. Canada is such a beautiful and varied country and it’s great to see so many more people experiencing what the nation has to offer in their own backyard.

Technology advancements

It’s a rapidly advancing world out there. However, thanks to the development of new technologies it’s possible to stay better connected to our beautiful planet than ever before. Even in the most secluded rural holiday parks and lodges, holidaymakers now expect Wi-Fi connectivity as part of their package rather than it being a nice-to-have.

This means families have immediate access to streaming movie services such as Netflix and various other forms of online entertainment that offer the perfect escape from everyday life. Those who enjoy the thrills of classic table games can compare live casino sites that are Canadian-friendly, offering live streamed dealer games for blackjack, roulette and many more that you can play together when snuggled up in the warm. The fact that these games are played via live-streamed video adds to the feeling of being in a land-based casino. The advent of mobile apps such as Tripadvisor also makes it easier than ever for locals to delve deeper into the best things that provinces on their doorstep have to offer, from the best-hidden gem restaurants to must-see excursions and activities.

Weak dollar

Certainly, the weak Canadian dollar has stopped people venturing south of the border into the United States in the last couple of years. Staycations have therefore also been a financial decision for families wanting some bonding time together on a budget. Interestingly, despite the Canadian dollar being as strong against the British pound as it has for many years – due largely to the outcome of the Brexit vote – almost twice as many Canadians opted to stay at home than venture to the UK or elsewhere in mainland Europe.

It’s great to see so many Canadians acknowledging the beauty of their own nation. For too long, staycations have been poo-poohed by those who believe that the only way to get a “true” vacation experience is to get on a plane for hours on end. Canada is such a rich and diverse country and there are awe-inspiring adventures around every corner if you’re prepared to look for them.
